The Highline: What our PiP dreams are made of

If you haven’t been to The Highline yet, stop whatever you’re doing. Call an UBER and take an early lunch break. The stretch of narrow greenery that runs between 10th and 11th Avenue from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, up to 34th street – is like a Summer oasis in the city.

A little history on the park: The Highline was created in the 1930s. It was a train rail built 30 feet above Manhattan streets, to keep unsafe freight trains out of the way of car and foot traffic. The trains transported milk, meat, produce and other manufactured goods, connecting directly to warehouses and factories. In the 50s the advent of interstate trucking eliminated the need for freight trains and by the 1980s The Highline was obsolete.

In the late 1990s, a group called “Friends of The Highline” petitioned to reopen the area as a public park, and won.  About 10 years later they began unveiling sections to the public. The park is a gorgeous stretch of flower gardens, converted rail tracks into walkways, innovative architecture and seating areas so creative they are like modern art. Being 30ft. above the city offers a very relaxing, cool vantage for the city and the Hudson river.

While the park offers stands to purchase snacks and drinks, if you order a PiP we will deliver it to you at the Highline area of your choice (just select Central Park but make sure to enter The Highline location in the details when you place the order!).

For directions, info on handicap access, bathrooms and hours check out the park’s site here.

PiP Forecast for the Weekend: Sunday is the day!

Although we’ve hosted many a fun, romantic indoor PiP (candlelit, thunderstorm luncheon anyone?)… but our outdoor picnic game is what we love best. This weekend, if you’re looking for the perfect day to bite the bullet and order you and your sweetheart a surprise: Sunday, July 13th is looking ideal.

A little rain on Saturday will be the perfect storm to set up Sunday for picnic perfection. Sunday’s 84 is hot. But, there will be a comfortable cross breeze – that you’ll feel even stronger on the Williamsburg Waterfront.
